Austin Ballou

Lexington, Kentucky       June 8, 2017

Austin Ballou of Nancy was named the State Star in Agricultural Placement at a special ceremony as part of the 88th State FFA Convention today in Lexington.  The Star in Agricultural Placement is the highest honor Kentucky FFA can award to a member.  The award is based on the student’s work with their Supervised Agricultural Experience Program, FFA involvement, and community service.  In addition to an application detailing his four years in FFA, Austin completed an interview in front of a panel of agricultural leaders from across the state.

Austin is the son of Jeff and Christie Ballou.  He is a member of the Southwestern Pulaski FFA chapter where his advisors are Chris McDonald and Rebecca French. Austin’s SAE consists of placement in the areas of livestock and grain production. At a young age, Austin began helping on his family farm by caring for the beef cattle and market hogs. Austin then utilized the skills he learned from his father to help other farmers in his community. He was first hired as a weekend feed manager at Ard Ridge Cattle Company, and a farm hand at Chris Pierce Farms. Austin then joined Fox Farms to help plant and harvest grain crops. Most recently, he has moved in a management role at Wolf Creek Farms. Austin is actively involved in the Southwestern Pulaski FFA Chapter where he has served as chapter vice president. He has participated the impromptu speaking contests for agriculture mechanics, swine and poultry.

Kentucky FFA is an organization of over 14,500 middle and high school students enrolled in Agricultural Education courses.  The organization currently has 152 chapters in 116 counties.  Nationally, FFA has over 629,000 members in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.  The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
